Choices, Part 1: 15 dollars per hour Versus 150 dollars per hour

This is based on a speech I’ve seen Brian and Darren Hefty give multiple times at their farming and agronomy seminars. I’ve updated it for inflation, the original figures were $10/hour and $100/hour.

The Hefty brothers said their father would tell them to find the “$100/hour” jobs and focus on those. That most farmers would rather paint a fence themselves than pay someone else $10/hour to paint the fence. But that only saves at most $10 per hour.

It does not account for the opportunity cost, which might be much higher. So, the question becomes: can the farmer find something to do with that fence-painting time which would be worth more than $10/hour.

Can the farmer identify jobs which will make or save the farm $100/hour? If so, then someone else can be paid to do the $10/hour jobs. But likely no one else can do the $100/hours jobs.

A Good Idea Used as a Sales Pitch Is Still a Good Idea

Brian and Darren Hefty were using this speech as a sales pitch for their soil and tissue testing services. The logic is still valid. Their next part of the speech, to a room of farmers, would be to ask the audience members to consider how much they expected to spend on fertilizer over the next ten years? And if they could save even 10% of that number, how much would that be? If it took 20-30 hours of time to save that 10%, how many dollars per hour would that savings come out to be. Put that way, the figure was well over $100 per hour (this was over 10 years ago).

They went through this sales pitch because most farmers do not enjoy paperwork. Most farmers dislike paperwork. If someone enjoyed paperwork they’d get a simpler office job than the risk, complexities, and physical labor of running a farm.

So, to ask a farmer to spend the time to take multiple soil and tissue samples, keep a record of where the samples were taken from and when, and maybe what stage of the plant’s growth, to send it off to a lab for testing, then to take the results and spend another few days matching up the results to individual fields and figuring out where the soil needed to be amended and where it didn’t need to be amended, is a big request. But, is there even a chance that 10% of the current fertilizer program isn’t needed for the next five to ten years? If that answer is yes, then the savings could easily be in tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

How This Relates to Using Technology

This seems unrelated to the question of how to make a person’s technology work for them, instead of the person working for their technology.

Yet, it has everything to do with that question. If the approach to technology, whether it’s a spreadsheet program, voice recorder, or anything else, is to fight with it every step of the way, that’s a lot of lost opportunity. If the person instead steps back and asks “what is the $150/hour job I am missing?” it’s likely they’ll realize there is an easier solution. Maybe the entire tool doesn’t have to be mastered, only one function. Perhaps there’s a much simpler tool which can be used. Or maybe it is the exact right tool for the exact right purpose, so it will be worth the time to spend two to three days learning the tool extensively.

Technology Won’t Get Someone To A Goal They Haven’t Defined

I created this blog to be about how a person can make their technology work for them. Personally, I like technology, gadgets, and tools.

However, I often talk to friends who want help with some piece of technology. “I just want it to work” is a common statement. In my opinion, they are working for their technology more than it is working for them.

Some of the biggest difficulties I’ve seen people have with technology is they haven’t decided what they’re aiming for. They don’t know how their steps today will get them to a place they want to be in the future.

A Simple Example

As a very simple example, one restaurant I frequent has a loyalty program. The loyalty program requires installing an app on a smartphone. I sympathize with why the restaurant wants their customers to install an app. There’s customer profiles, direct to customer messages, tracking trend with regular customers, detailed data on what dishes are doing well. But why would I, the customer, want to download the app?

There are some rewards for the loyalty program, discounts on dishes or next visit or something-or-other. I read through the apps list of what information it tracks, and honestly it was more than I wanted to share with a restaurant app.

Data harvesting aside, each app on my smartphone and each program on my computer is a place for trouble to start. It’s a place for a conflict with other programs or with the operating system to arise. It’s something to potentially eat up my computer’s or smartphone’s processor cycles or memory space.

Is there anything so important about a restaurant loyalty app that it’s worth all that hassle? No, not for me.

The Existence of Something Does Not Obligate Me To Buy It.

Too often when my friends ask me about helping them with some piece of technology, they never stopped to wonder why they got it in the first place. Yes, there might have been an end goal of more money, less worry, more time, a task being easier to accomplish. This piece of technology was presented to them, and there doesn’t seem to have been a lot of thought about “Will this thing in front of me get me to the goals I want to achieve?”

Many times, there wasn’t a goal set at all. Someone told them it was a good idea or a recommended idea for something-or-other, and now there’s this piece of technology that they are working for.

The Person Doing the Job Is As Important As the Job

Is It the Tool, Or Is It the User?

It’s as important to use a tool which fits the person doing the job, as it is to use a tool which fits the job.

I started this blog for a number of reasons. One of them is to get more familiar with WordPress in its current form.

And I have found I like the WordPress post editor for editing. I hate the WordPress post editor for composing. It’s not local, it’s hosted on a server somewhere, so sometimes there is a slight delay between me typing and the letters showing up on the screen. At times this is maddening.

More frustrating is trying to navigate between paragraphs using the keyboard. Sometimes the arrow keys work great in the post editor. Sometimes the arrow keys don’t work at all, even when I know there is more text to see if I could just get the screen to keep scrolling down.

I’m By Myself, So If It Works For Me, Then It Works For Me

The last couple of weeks I’ve started composing posts in a program that runs on my computer. No internet connection needed, navigation in the document is simple. Then I cut and paste it into the WordPress post editor and finish editing there.

That works much better for me.

I am sure there are writers out there who love the post editor. And that is the point of this post: sometimes who is doing the job and using the tools is as important, or even more important, than which tools are being used.

This is part of a larger theme I repeatedly see, confusing the How with the Goal and the Why. If my Goal was to learn how to use the WordPress post editor, inside and out, then using a separate program for composing would be admitting defeat. If my Goal instead is learning how to use WordPress efficiently, and it’s more efficient for me to use a separate writing program for composition, I think that’s fine.

What If It’s Not Just Me?

Writing this, I have newfound sympathy for someone supervising a group of creators. Yes, as long as each person gets their part of the job done, then how much do tools matter? But if they have to work together, they’ll need a common framework to talk to each other. If it’s expected that absences can be covered by co-workers, then common tools are essential.

Am I Looking In the Wrong Places?

For tasks such as editing photos or video or graphics, I see many tutorials on how to set up workflow. I don’t see nearly as many tutorials for how to set up workflow when it comes to writing, or to blogging. I’m not sure if I’m actually seeing a lack, or if I’m not looking in the right places.

Slowing Down to Speed Up, Writing Edition

I listen to some small business and entrepreneur podcasts. One of the phrases I frequently hear is “slow down to speed up.”

I’ll be honest, I typically hear that right before the host explains why they fought that idea when they first heard it, before having to learn it the hard way. And by “hard way,” I mean by repeated painful experience. Anyway, I’ll get back on topic.

Slowing down to speed up also applies to writing. I used to wonder why there were so many different types of notebooks and stationery. For that matter, why were there so many different types of accounting ledger books?

In both cases, writing something down and then rewriting it somewhere else in a different way helps focus the mind.

For writing, I’ve seen guidelines which say there is a creative mode which runs fast and often a bit too free, then there is the editing mode. These are different parts of the brain, and trying to switch in and out of editing mode while ostensibly being in creating mode doesn’t work that well.

I’ve tried that with writing and it does work. I’m still not fully in the habit. But each time I get a little bit better are remembering to let it flow first and then go back and correct later.

I’m also finding it helps to do that with money. I don’t write down every cent of every transaction, but I’m starting to create a list of regular expenses, pulling the information from multiple other places it’s recorded. And it is helping me focus on what I want to keep and what I’m fine letting go.

Why am I writing this on a blog about making technology work for you?

Technology has created so many time-saving services, it’s erased the friction which used to exist. So we all, myself included, want to let the apps and programs and whatever do it all for us. When we do that, we convince ourselves we’re going faster and faster. But we’re planning and considering less and less.

A re-read and rewriting of a good idea is better than writing it hurriedly fifteen times. And it will be fifteen times because we’re moving so fast we forgot what we already wrote.

An inventory and accounting of what classes and guides and books have already been purchased is better than purchasing more variations of the same thing. But it’s faster and feels faster to just buy more of what has already been purchases.

Slowing down to go faster is a real thing.

Thoughts About Technology: Our Brains Are Not Hard Drives. Write It Down.

I don’t like to admit mistakes. I think most people are the same way.

So none of us like to admit what we’ve forgotten. If we forget enough things, we start to forget what we’ve forgotten.

If it’s something I want to remember, I need to write it down. And if it’s worth keeping, I’ll eventually come back to it. Which means I’ll probably have to do some occasional reorganization of what I’ve written. Again, if the information is worth keeping, I’ll come back to it and it will be worth the time to reorganize.

It took me a long time to realize this. I thought it was just me, until I started to notice how few people keep notes on anything. And how much people struggle to recreate or rediscover information which I know they already had.

Write it down.

Thoughts About Technology: You Can’t Take the Humanity Out of Being Human, Physicality

I think part of the appeal of technology as magic is the hope that with enough technology, the messiness of being human goes away.

Except, it doesn’t go away. We’re all still human.

There are ways in which the brain and the body map onto each other which are unavoidable. I’ve read multiple articles about people blind since birth still “talking with their hands” when describing something to another person. There is still the need to show with the movements of the hands the movements of concepts in the brain.

In one of the early episodes of The Huberman Lab podcast, Huberman talks about stress. He says stress in the brain activates nerves for movement in the legs and the muscles used for speech. He notes this is why it is so common for people to say unfortunate things when they feel stressed. What he doesn’t note, but what appears in innumerable jokes, cartoons, and memes, is the need to pace back and forth when in an intense discussion.

There are also differences in typing something on a screen and writing it by hand on paper. It feels different as the writer, and research shows it activates different parts of the brain.

Being human means having a human body and being susceptible to the ways in which the body and the brain interact with each other and with the outside environment. We’re all always human. No amount of magic technology will change that.

Thoughts About Technology: Technology Isn’t Magic, But Humans Are.

As I’m writing this in early February, 2023, ChatGPT is all over the news. It’s all over the tech podcasts and news sites. I’ve even seen a newsletter for copywriters advertising a class for writing copy with ChatGPT.

More reasons why technology is not magic.

I’ve seen this at least twice and maybe three times before. A few years ago it was machine learning. Long before that, in the 1990s it was fuzzy logic. I think there was another AI (Artificial Intelligence) alleged breakthrough in the two thousand zeroes.

Each time it’s going to replace humans and each time it doesn’t. Each time the hype and hysteria fade and frequently there are some fairly embarrassing faceplants. For machine learning, after all the breathless hype about amazing image recognition, several models were broken by taking recognized pictures and changing a couple of pixels. I’ll repeat that, machine learning recognition of items in photographs was broken by changing just a few pixels. In one example, a toy turtle was labeled a gun after a few pixels were changed.

Yes, there a few successes. Facial recognition has progressed by leaps and bounds. There are also dedicated efforts to finding ways to mess it up, including specialized makeup and specialized eyeglass frames. What wasn’t mentioned was how much facial recognition is hampered by face masks, which have now become normalized in most of the world and are still mandatory in many places.

Getting back to ChatGPT, the current media darling, there’s already been multiple examples of ChatGPT being asked to write an article and getting basic information about the topic wrong.

Two already known circumstances where AI and machine learning fail:

  • They can’t understand context, and
  • They can’t understand or recreate humor. At all.

There’s probably more.

Humans Do Amazing, Almost Magical Things, All the Time.

Meanwhile, every time researchers try to copy something humans do all the time with technology, it turns out it’s really hard.

Robots transitioned to stationary or wheeled or bug-like decades ago because walking is really hard. We actually go through a series of controlled falls when we walk. I think there’s something like seven different points of stability and balance in our bodies when we walk, which we don’t notice but programming into robots is really difficult.

The first Avatar movie cost so much in part because James Cameron developed whole new headgear to watch and record the actors’ eyes and tongue while acting. He did this because eye and tongue movements are two things computer animation still couldn’t replicate convincingly, so he recorded that from the actors to add into the animated characters.

We can look at pictures that are fuzzy, pixelated, or poorly focused, and still recognize the object.

From what I’ve seen, ChatGPT is useful for quickly producing a lot of text that then needs to be edited and reviewed by a human. And that’s only if the person asking the question does a very good job of setting the parameters. And only if the person editing the response already knows the topic.

Technology isn’t magic, no matter how much we keep trying to convince ourselves it is.

Technician Tuesday: To Learn a Skill, Solve a Problem.

Don’t be afraid to try something. The easiest way I have found to learn something is to try and find a problem that you need to solve.

I was going to write something else today. Then I heard this podcast the other night. I agree with Mark and Jeremy. If I want to learn a skill, the best way to motivate myself is to use the skill to fix a problem which is bothering me.

Mindset Monday: Use the Physical World as a Model for Your Expectations and Habits.

I usually leave the house with a coat, and a bag to hold my wallet, cellphone, and writing pad. If it’s a nice day, I might take along a digital camera in case I see something I want to photograph. I’ll also take a magazine or book if I might have some free time.

If I’m going to an exercise class I’ll take a bag with my gear for that class. A laptop and associated power cord and mouse in a backpack come along also, if I think I’ll need them.

I don’t take each of those things with me each time I leave the house.

When I install new programs on a personal computer, there’s often an option to add that program to the startup programs. Rarely are those programs a stand-alone executable: there will be background processes and programs they will start up in turn, just like I don’t take a laptop without taking a power cord and a separate bag or backpack to hold the laptop and power cord.

A personal computer with a ton of programs that start up with the computer takes a long time to start up. Similarly, if every time I leave the house I take everything I might possibly need, ever, it will take me a long time to leave the house.

When people ask me for help with their computers or other technology, rarely do they try to compare it to what they already know and do. Technology is a magical thing that they “don’t understand” and wish it would “just work.”

It’s not magic. It’s like any other tool.

Mindset Monday: The Cloud and TANSTAAFL

The word “cloud” has long existed in the English language. “The cloud” took on a technological meaning several years ago.

The concept of “the cloud” was originally met with skepticism. It seemed unlikely that companies would throw away the investments they’d made in servers and the infrastructure to support servers and would entrust their data to servers that they didn’t have physical access to and which were run and maintained by people who weren’t their employees.

The skeptics were wrong. Even though “the cloud” means a computer owned by someone who isn’t you, once all the cyberpunk and world of tomorrow imagery is stripped away, “the cloud” became so popular it’s a multi-billion dollar business for multiple companies.

And yet, problems remain.

Today I read the article “Basecamp details ‘obscene’ $3.2 million bill that caused it to quit the cloud” by Simon Sharwood in The Register (article dated 2023 Jan 16). That article led me to “The world was promised ‘cloud magic’. So much for that fairy tale” also by Simon Sharwood (article dated 2022 Nov 2), “VC’s paper claims cost of cloud is twice as much as running on-premises. Let’s have a look at that” by Tim Anderson (article dated 2021 Jun 02), and “AWS Free Tier, where’s your spending limit? ‘I thought I deleted everything but I have been charged $200′” also by Tim Anderson (article dated 2021 May 28), all in The Register.

If it wasn’t obvious from the titles, the common theme of these four articles is “the cloud” can be expensive.

Why am I writing about this in a Mindset post?

I believe one of the eternal human temptations is for each of us to believe we are uniquely special. Sure, there are rules which almost all of us agree apply to almost all of us, almost all of the time. But there is the temptation to then say under our breaths “but not to me.”

TANSTAAFL means There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

The illusory promise of “the cloud” was the cost of hiring people who understood servers and server infrastructure, and the cost of buying, installing, using, and maintaining servers and their supporting infrastructure, could be farmed out to a different company and it would be cheaper and simpler. Even though there would be additional layers of cost and overhead because it was someone else’s employees and physical installation which was being used, that would still be better and cheaper.

I’ll even admit for many companies it was better and cheaper. For many companies, it’s still better and cheaper for right now.

There (still) Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. The servers cost money and so does the electricity, air conditioning, security, internet connections, employees to monitor and maintain the servers, and everything else which comes with having a data center.

Eventually someone has to pay that price. It’s very unlikely the cloud companies are running their businesses as charities or non-profits. And that means the cost comes back to the customers.
